Hewlett-Packard takes number one position in Russia for the first time

Moscow, Russia, August 12, 1999 - The Russian PC market continued on a course of gradual recovery following the period of economic crisis in 1998. Though typically this is the weakest quarter of the year in Russia, in Q2 1999 shipments were only slightly lower than the quarter before. IDC recorded total shipments of 201,354 units for a total market value of $205.6 million.

The market fell by 19.9 percent in unit terms compared with the same period a year before.

Reflecting significant falls in system selling prices, IDC estimates that the total value of the Russian PC market fell 30.6 percent compared with Q2 1998. For the first time since IDC has monitored quarterly PC shipments in Russia, IDC recorded an international vendor in first place in the Russian PC market. IDC estimates that Hewlett-Packard took first place in Q2 1999. Compaq, which also recorded a strong quarter, placed second.

Sales of desktop PC were strongest compared with the same period in 1998. This segment shrank 18.8 percent compared with Q2 1998. Weakest were sales of portable PCs, with shipments falling 41.7 percent compared with Q2 1998.
